We care about people’s health, respect the environment and control the use of resources, as we are aware of our responsibilities with regard to future generations.
We constantly monitor environment and safety at all our production sites to prevent any kind of negative impact and at the same time ensure the best working conditions.
We continue to grow, but we want to grow in a sustainable way, aiming to continuously improve our performance.
Environmental protection is an integral part of our industrial policy: business development and environmental sustainability are essential to one other.
The investments made to save energy have achieved a reduction in energy consumption despite the increase in production volumes. We also introduced more efficient automated systems and air filtration, to improve the working environment.
The volume of supply and discharge water resources has decreased over the past few years thanks to constant controls on water resources. Specific plans are scheduled for the near future to continue improving our performance in this aspect.
The company’s policy has been effective in increasing levels of recyclable waste, even though there has been a moderate increase in waste generation overall due to increased production.
With regard to air quality, atmospheric emissions are moderate and are mainly due to the natural gas boilers which produce steam.
A positive trend with regard to workers’ health and safety has been maintained: both frequency and seriousness of workplace accidents are constantly decreasing. Whilst this is a satisfactory achievement, we intend to carry on improving our performance also as a result of staff training programmes and the enforcement of new measures and procedures.
The plants have recently adopted the Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) system, a method of accident prevention thanks to the creation of a "shared culture" about safety for employees to avoid behaviour that can result in accidents.
New Chemical Entities Management
We have also developed a new procedure that formalises a periodical assessment process concerning toxicological and pharmacological information about new molecules, which makes the flow of information, the process of risk assessment and the management of occupational exposure more efficient.
Safety training for employees is another essential aspect for us. To maintain high standard levels we have introduced new software to monitor and implement training, new training programmes with sessions to put learning into practice and distance learning via e-learning. In addition, all members of the Sales Force have taken a safe driving course at the Quattroruote training centre.
Environment and Safety Management Systems
We have introduced a system with constant monitoring to ensure workers’ health and safety, in compliance with current regulations. Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and Environmental Management Systems to comply with international standards OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 have been adopted at the Italian sites
Environmental Management is a voluntary programme that involves a variety of tasks such as the drafting of an “Environmental Policies” document, which formalises the commitment of the management to prevent environmental impact, the planning of activities to undertake once significant environmental issues have been identified, the monitoring of measures put in place and the review for the assessment of company performance.
In October 2012 we were awarded the Environmental Management System certification, complying with ISO 14001, confirming our commitment to environmental protection.
BS OHSAS 18001 is the international model for health and safety management systems at work. It specifies the requirements for the Work Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and it enables the company to control risks and improve performance. Since 2009, we have conformed to this standard by using Certiquality for verification activities. In 2012 Certiquality awarded the Group the Certificate of Excellence, reserved for organisations that have implemented a certified management system for the following three main aspects: Quality, Environment and Safety. We have implemented all three systems for all our business activities and we are one of the few Italian companies in the pharma sector to receive this award.
In 2013 the three-year Safety OHSAS 18001 certificate expired, and CERTIQUALITY carried out an integrated inspection with the ISO14001 system. This was possible due to significant efforts made to integrate the management of environment and safety aspects, and look for synergies between these two areas.
Chiesi production plants in the world
We also pay particular attention to our other production sites in the world (Blois and St. Paul). Even though they do not yet have a management certified system, they have specific site policies, are periodically inspected and send their key performance data to the Corporate functions annually.
Significant focus has been made on safety and the environment at the new Blois production site in France. The new plant has been designed taking into account current legal requirements and company best practices.
Environment and safety aspects are also monitored at the Santana de Parnaíba site in Brazil: we recently upgraded the internal fire prevention system to ensure the best performance in emergency situations.
