  • The volume follows the project of the new, innovative, and sustainable headquarters of the Group, opened in Parma in June 2020 based on a project by EFA architectural studio

Parma (Italy), December 13, 2021 – The Chiesi Headquarters in Parma, the international research-focused pharmaceutical and healthcare group (Chiesi Group), takes center stage in the monograph “SPAZIO LAVORO ARCHITETTURA”, published by Electaarchitettura, which documents its conception and construction based on a project by the EFA architectural studio.

Built on an area of 46,300 square meters - redeveloping an abandoned industrial area without the use of any agricultural land - the new Chiesi Headquarters accommodates around 540 people, including the top management of the Group, which currently has branches in 30 countries around the world.

“Innovation”, “people” and “sustainability” are the three keywords that have guided the EFA architectural studio in the configuration of the office building built near the Research Centre, which was inaugurated in 2011, thus guaranteeing the creation of a genuine citadel of business. The goal was to place the enhancement of resources and human relations at the heart of the production, in accordance with a new type of more flexible use, enriching the professional experience with ample space for sharing and leisure time outside the workplace.

The construction of the new Headquarters has been a source of great pride for Chiesi. It’s actually extraordinary in such rapid and complex times to have completed a work that allows us to look to the future from a perspective that is even more oriented towards innovation and internationalization while remaining close to our roots – comments Alberto Chiesi, President of Chiesi Group -. Despite the pandemic, we have been able to occupy it since 2020 and now, with the gradual return to normality, it is truly becoming the meeting point of the more than 6,000 people who animate our Group. The volume from Electaarchitettura, which recounts the architectural project at the foundation of our Headquarters, also represents for us a personal thanks to all those who made it possible with their work.”

Sociability, inclusiveness, and the overall welfare of employees are the core of the designs that have given life to a multi-purpose pavilion, an auditorium, a company restaurant. Spaces created as a result of a data analysis aimed at understanding the needs and expectations of future users.

An important project for Chiesi and for the city of Parma, which sees the redevelopment of an area clearly visible from the highway. This project completes an overall vision that intends to initiate a widespread enhancement process along the northern edge of the residential area, thanks also to the KilometroVerdeParma initiative - affirms Maria Pilar Vettori of EFA architectural studio –. The publication of this monograph is testimony to a long journey made together with many actors that intends to recount not only the architecture of the building but also its history”.

The new Headquarters - adds Pietro Chierici of EFA architectural studio - is located in complete continuity with the neighbouring 'House of Research', inaugurated in 2011 and dedicated to the Group's Research and Development activities, with which it constitutes a genuine corporate campus of international importance”.

The Headquarters is located within the larger “KilometroVerdeParma” project, a tree-lined corridor along the A1 highway created to redevelop the environment of one of the busiest motorway sections in Europe, in continuity with the spirit of Chiesi, a Benefit Corporation in Italy, the United States and France and the largest international pharmaceutical group B Corp certified.

As a testimony to these choices, the Headquarters is the first building of its kind to be certified LEED Platinum (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in Italy and is among the top 35 buildings in the world, the highest step in the international rating system promoted by the Green Building Council issued by the American organization GBCI (Green Business Certification Inc.).

All these elements - conception, design choices, materials, technologies and the entire construction process - have converged in the volume “EFA architectural studio. “SPAZIO LAVORO ARCHITETTURA - Chiesi Headquarters, Parma” composed of eight short essays and accompanied by a rich iconographic apparatus of author's photos and technical drawings. Published by Electaarchitettura, the volume is in a bilingual edition, in Italian and English.

EFA architectural studio

The studio, based in Parma, addresses the themes of the city, architecture and innovative technologies, explored in the duality of functional content and performance and of morphological-compositional synthesis. Theoretical activity is flanked by design practice according to an interdisciplinary and multi-scale vision of the profession of architect that combines a culture of both the humanities and science. Landscape, sustainable development and technological innovation represent the main elements of comparison of the design method applied to the standards of urban, architectural and building construction. Some of the numerous projects in Italy and abroad have received publication in major trade magazines, as well as participation in design competitions, receiving prizes and awards. Hybridization, contamination, multidisciplinarity are the paradigms that feed the practice of the studio, whose players, in order of affiliation, are today Emilio Faroldi, Maria Pilar Vettori, Pietro Chierici, Francesca Pesci, Dario Cea, Giorgia Fochi.
